‘Spare the Rod’ show planned in Charlotte

A Wilson playwright’s award-winning gospel stage play will be performed in North Carolina’s largest city next month.

Mildred Summerville’s “Spare the Rod, Spoil the Child” is planned for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10 at the Ovens Auditorium in Charlotte. Tickets start at $44.

Headlining the production are Grammy Award-winning artist Dorinda Clark Cole, Queen of Gospel Comedy Trina Jeffrie and Crissy Collins, who is best known for her stage performances in Tyler Perry’s “The Family That Preys,” “Madea Goes to Jail” and “Madea’s Big Happy Family.”

“This soul-stirring entertaining production is for the entire family,” said Summerville, the play’s writer and executive producer and co-founder of Tall One Outreach Ministries. “It warms the hearts, tickles funny bones, uplifts spirits and takes a deep dive into the souls of all who experience it — this is a must-see!”

The 2019 Charlotte production is being sponsored by The Rock Worship Center in memory of Gabriel Michael Jacobs, a 12-year-old Charlotte native who passed away unexpectedly on April 9, 2015. Created in his honor, the Gabe’s Heart Foundation recognizes the “unsung heroes” of the world to highlight their good deeds.
